India e-Visa passport scan

Compress a PDF to 300 KB.

The e-Visa passport-page scan accepts PDF up to 300 KB — and 300 KB is also the quality-headroom version of every stricter portal cap. Colour A4 at about 200 DPI lives here.

e-Visa document spec

  • Passport bio-page scan: PDF, up to 300 KB.
  • Photo: JPEG 10–300 KB, square — see the 300 KB image page.
  • Newer portal flows sometimes accept up to 1 MB; targeting 300 KB keeps one file valid everywhere.

What 300 KB buys over 200 KB

Colour A4 at ≈ 200 DPI stays legible; two greyscale pages fit; and the MRZ — the two machine-readable lines at the foot of the bio page — keeps the edge contrast that OCR and officers read first.

Expert trap: MRZ legibility

If the quality search softens the MRZ lines, do not add colour — re-scan greyscale at 200–300 DPI instead. Greyscale at higher resolution beats colour at lower resolution for machine-readable zones, at fewer bytes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the e-Visa PDF size limit?

300 KB for the passport-page scan; the accompanying photo is JPEG, 10–300 KB, square.

Colour or greyscale for the bio page?

Greyscale at 200 DPI usually keeps the MRZ crisp at half the bytes. Use colour only when stamps or endorsements carry information the validator needs.

Can a two-page passport scan fit 300 KB?

In greyscale at 150 DPI, often yes. Two colour pages will not — split them or drop to greyscale.

What about signed or encrypted PDFs?

Encrypted files cannot be opened by the tool; digitally signed PDFs must never be re-encoded, since compression voids the signature. Compress first, sign second.

Is 300 KB safe for portals that ask for less?

No — respect each portal's own cap. But one 300 KB file is valid for every portal whose limit is 300 KB or higher, which makes it a good master copy.
